黑暗物质三部曲 His Dark Materials (2019)
Anticipation is high for this British fantasy series, based on Philip Pullman's best-selling novel trilogy. An adaptation of the first book, The Golden Compass, came and went without fanfare in 2007. But this new take, with an inital season of eight episodes, promises a more lengthy telling of the stories, in which two children embark on a magical adventure through parallel universes. With Logan star Dafne Keen playing the young Lyra Belacqua alongside a cast that also includes Lin-Manuel Miranda and James McAvoy, this is one for the Watchlist.
末日巡逻队 The Doom Patrol (2019)
Streaming service DC Universe is bringing one of the strangest teams in comic-book history to life. "Doom Patrol" centers on a group of outcast superheroes led by "modern day mad scientist" Dr. Niles Caulder. They all share a tragic backstory of horrific accidents, which left them disfigured but imbued with superhuman abilities. Members of the team were first seen on the "Titans" TV series (pictured) and the full series is expected in the first half of 2019.
麻烦一家人 Good Trouble (2019)
The influence of "The Fosters" continues to spread through this spin-off series that follows Callie and Mariana Foster (Maia Mitchell and Cierra Ramirez) as they've moved north and are settling into life in Los Angeles. Though they haven't flown too far from the nest, fans of all things Foster know the show would do itself a disservice if it didn't show Callie and Mariana struggling with relatable issues in a city that can consume you in an instant. Out of all the proposed and planned spin-offs on television, something tells us we will be hard-pressed to find another show that accurately depicts the struggles that young people face in ways that doesn't make you roll your eyes and say, "That's so Millennial."
杀手一班 Deadly Class (2019)
Hey, another series about a group of uniquely skilled (and nattily clad) students honing their crafts at a super-secret school for the gifted! And it's also based on a comic book! Deadly Class may not score a ton of points for originality, but it makes up for that with a fantastic cast of up-and-coming stars, including Siobhan Williams, Benjamin Wadsworth, and Netflix rom-com fave Lana Condor.
黑袍纠察队 The Boys (2019)
Adapted from the comic series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, "The Boys" is a super-dark take on what happens when superheroes get out of control. Centered on a CIA-backed squad tasked with policing the world's superheroes, the comic was full of graphic sex and violence. How will the showrunners translate this to the screen in a way that’s faithful and filmable? Details are slim at this point, so eager fans will have to stay tuned to find out.
守望者 Watchmen (2019)
In 2018, HBO confirmed a full-season order of "Watchmen," based on Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons' iconic comic-book series. In a long letter to his fans, showrunner Damon Lindelof ("Lost," "The Leftovers") explained his creative intentions, stating that out of respect to the source material, the upcoming series would not be a sequel or an adaptation but an original story set within the canon of the "Watchmen" universe, where superheroes have been deemed as outlaws. Who's going to be watching the Watchmen? Well, us ... we've already added this one to our Watchlists.
伞学院 The Umbrella Academy (2019)
The acclaimed comic from former My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá finally gets a live-action adaptation, coming to Netflix in February. Shot with style to spare, and featuring a cast that includes Ellen Page and Mary J. Blige, "The Umbrella Academy" follows a group of former students at an elite superhero school who must reunite to save the world. And while it's not an MCR reunion, we guess it'll do.
末日之旅 The Passage (2019)
With a retooled pilot episode and plenty of advanced hype, this adaptation of Justin Cronin's fantasy-book trilogy became Fox's first pilot-to-series order of the 2018 upfront season. And the buzz keeps building as "The Passage" has the ingredients — a secret government facility, a deadly virus, a genetically mutated race of monsters, and a young girl who might be the key to saving the world from their wrath — to keep genre TV fans wondering how this will play out, especially since the show is described as "loosely based" on Cronin's source material. Plus, grown-up TV idol Mark-Paul Gosselaar stars alongside fast-rising kiddo Saniyya Sidney. Turn this up to Eleven?
我即黑夜 I Am The Night (2019)
Chris Pine and Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins are teaming up again, this time to fulfill audiences' true crime fascination. No, not in a new movie, but the TNT limited series "I Am the Night." Pine stars alongside India Eisley in this new noir-esq show, which follows a reporter and a young woman as they unravel the mystery of her past. Can it compete with another dark crime drama also releasing in January? We'll have to wait and see, but the newest trailer is sure to draw in all of the true crime addicts out there.
好兆头 Good Omens (2019)
Based on one of Neil Gaiman's most beloved and hilarious novels (co-written with Terry Pratchett), "Good Omens" is finally coming to the screen, with Michael Sheen ("Masters of Sex") as the angel Aziraphale and David Tennant ("Doctor Who") as the demon Crowley, who team up to prevent Armageddon. Fans (and nuns) have been chattering about this story for years, and if IMDb users are any indication, we’re all planning to binge this the moment it’s released.
